What academic programs are offered at UNM?

Many of the degree programs have additional concentrations and options; for example, either a bachelor’s of science or a bachelors of arts. The University is nationally recognized for its programs in Latin American Studies, anthropology, photography, biology, nuclear pharmacy, laser optics, and environmental studies, among others.

What are the UNM Core Curriculum Requirements?

All UNM Students are required to complete the Core Curriculum as part of their baccalaureate (Bachelor's) degree program. There are VERY limited, specific exceptions allowed, and only for certain specific colleges or majors. All Courses are one semester in length. Unless noted, all courses are offered for 3 credit hours. You may download a pdf of the core curriculum requirements here.

What kind of tutoring services are available at UNM?

The Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) located in Zimmerman Library provides free academic support services to all undergraduates. CAPS offers individual tutoring, small group workshops, study skills workshops and credit courses in learning skills, research strategies and research paper development.

What kind of computing services are available to students?

At UNM, students have free access to several conveniently located computing facilities on campus.  Students can prepare papers, perform statistical analyses, draw architectural designs, write computer programs and communicate with students around the world.

Do students have to declare a major when they apply?

No. All new freshmen are automatically enrolled in Undergraduate Studies.  Once a student has satisfactorily completed a minimum of 26 semester hours and has met all prerequisites of the college they wish to enter, they may transfer to one of the degree granting programs of the University.  However, depending upon a student's ACT or SAT score, he or she may be able to enroll directly into the College of Engineering (students should call Engineering to get more information about this opportunity).

Do graduate students teach classes?

The vast majority of UNM classes are taught by lecturers/professors.  However, there are graduate students who teach classes or serve as teaching assistants.
